Slaves to Jesus & Mary: Establishing a new confraternity in Bruges.

[Bruges] / [Confraternity]. Alexander PP. VII Ad Perpetuam Rei Memoriam. Cum sicut accepimus in Eccl[es]ia[m] Parochiali Sancti Petri super aggerum Brugen[sis]… Rome & Bruges: 1658. [41.1 cm x 29.1 cm], [1] f. manuscript on vellum. Folded, minor wrinkling and toning. Well preserved.

Manuscript papal brief on vellum concerning the establishment in 1658 of the “Confraternity of Slaves to Jesus & Mary” (“Confraternitatis sub denominatione Mancipior[um] Jesus et Mariae”) at the church of Sanctus Petrus super Aggerem (i.e., Sint-Pieters-op-den-Dijk, or Saint-Pierre-sur-la-Digue), located on the outskirts of Bruges.

Membership in the confraternity was open to both men and women. The document outlines expectations (e.g., almsgiving and attending mass at certain altars on certain feast days) and privileges (confraternity-specific indulgences, special burial rights, etc.).

The brief was issued by Pope Alexaner VII (r. 1655-67) on 30 July 1658 from Sta. Maria Maggiore in Rome, as was customary. At the bottom of the brief are annotations by relevant officials in Bruges dated 4 September 1658.

I have been unable to locate any references to this document or indeed to the “Confraternity of Slaves to Jesus & Mary” at Sint-Pieters-op-den-Dijk.
