First Swedish translation of Charlotte Lennox’s 'Henrietta.' 1 copy worldwide.

Stockholm: Truckt hos Carl Stolpe, 1781 & 1782. 8vo [17.5 x 10.2 cm], 2 volumes bound as one,  231 pp., [1] p., 280 pp., with woodcut title-page vignette and tail-pieces. Half bound in contemporary calf and sprinkled paper over pasteboard, gold-stamped lettering pieces laid to spine, spine gold tooled, red edges. Rubbing and edge wear to spine and boards, contemporary annotations (of a certain Hans Anderson) to front pastedown, title, and rear flyleaf. A few annotations in the text, occasional minor stains and marginal tears, loss to upper corner at p. 261 of second volume affecting a handful of words.
 
 
Very rare (1 copy worldwide: Swedish National Library) first and only edition of this first Swedish translation of the 1758 novel Henrietta by the Scottish writer Charlotte Lennox (c. 1729-1804).
 
The novel follows the fortunes of Henrietta Courteney to explore themes of friendship, money, love, and class as they relate to ‘unprotected’ women of the 18th century.
 
Lennox is best known for her novels The Female Quixote (1752) and Sophia (1762) and for her scholarly investigation of the source material of Shakespeare’s plays (Shakespear Illustrated: Or The Novels and Histories, on which the Plays of Shakespear are Founded, 1753-4). She was especially praised by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Samuel Johnson and Henry Fielding.
 
This volume carries contemporary ownership inscriptions of a certain Hans Anderson, who notes what he paid for the book and its binding and remarks “I have read this novel twice through with great pleasure” (“Denna Roman Har jag med stort nöje genomläst 2 gånger”).
