Quarto-size woodblock head-piece depicting the goddess Diana.

Quarto-size woodblock head-piece depicting the goddess Diana.

[Woodblock]. [Woodblock head-piece with image of Diana]. S.l.: s.n., s.a. [17th or 18th century]. [12.7 x 2.5 x 2.1 cm], [1] woodblock. Remnants of paper affixed to two sides, well preserved.

Original 17th- or 18th-century woodblock head-piece depicting the bust of the goddess Diana (with the crescent moon atop her head). She is flanked by rinceaux with flower blossoms and grape bunches. The block would have been used in printing quarto books. The style here suggests an origin in France or perhaps the Low Countries.

Early modern woodblocks of this sort are today only rarely encountered outside of a museum context.
