Von Kravogl in In[n]sbruck, s.a. [c. 1840]. [11.1 x 7.9 cm], [1] f. lithograph. Only very minor staining.

Unrecorded lithograph published by Johann Kravogl of Innsbruck depicting the incorrupt relic corpse of St. Angela Merici, who, as the German text of the print tells us, was born in 1474 in Desenzano on Lago di Garda, founded in Company of St. Ursula [the Angelines] in 1535, died on 27 January in Brescia, was beatified by Clement XIII on 30 April 1768, and was canonized by Pius VIII on 24 May 1807.

Angela Merici and her Company of St. Ursula were renowned for their focus is the education of women and girls. Her body was interred at the church of Sant’Afra in Brescia, which was destroyed in WWII and reconstructed as the church of Sant’Angela Merici.

Johann Kravogl studied drawing under Jacob Pirchstaller in the town of Meran and thereafter learned painting in Vienna under Josef Kraft. He taught drawing in Innsbruck from 1826 and worked there as a portrait painter and miniaturist. In 1834 Kravogl opened a lithographic studio in Innsbruck, specializing in devotional and other popular images. In addition to his art/publishing successes, Kravogl is best remembered today for his efforts (along with those of his wife, Theresia) to establish a convent of Discalced Carmelite nuns in Innsbruck, which they achieved in 1846 with the founding of the Karmel St. Josef und St. Teresa (see Gertraud Zeindl for this unusual history).

The print is not located by OCLC or KVK, nor have I seen it mentioned in the literature on either Merici or Kravogl.
