Unrecorded ‘Stations of the Cross’ devotional handbook with a suite of 15 very rare engravings.

The suite’s engraved title page depicts the Instruments of the Passion (or ‘Arma Christi’) and carries an address of a Munich bookbinder, which reads “München zu finden beÿ Joseph Krinner Buchbinder 1780.” Krinner’s name is known from the early 1760s. The (letterpress) book also carries the name of a bookbinder, a certain J. B. Oettl, whose shop was near the Peterskirche in Munich.

The book was to be used “for obtaining all indulgences, as in Jerusalem, both for oneself and for the souls of loved ones in purgatory.” The role of Franciscans in promoting such devotion is noted.

OCLC and KVK do not locate this volume published by Oettl, and the suite of engravings by Krinner are extremely rare (no U.S. copies according to OCLC and KVK).
