18th-century preparatory drawing for an engraving of St. Monica.
[Preparatory drawing] / [Engraving]. S. Monaca. S.l. [German lands?]: s.n., s.a. [18th century]. [13.1 x 8.5 cm], [1] f. wash drawing on laid paper. Well preserved.
A grisaille wash drawing (of some quality) depicting St. Monaca kneeling in prayer in front of a crucifix & book on a small altar. The drawing is labeled “S. Monaca” in brown ink. While it is possible that this item was produced as a stand-alone devotional piece, it is more likely that it is a preparatory drawing for an engraving.
Devotional prints in imitation of wash drawings were popular during the late 18th century, especially in German-speaking Catholic lands.
