Rare (no U.S. copies) ephemeral news report from Rome describing the savage murder in 1761 of 3 women by the coachman Giovanni Neofito, a.k.a. “Chiacchiarino” (“Chatterbox”).
Chiacchiarino bludgeoned his godmother and her roommate and cut the throat of their neighbor. He then stole from them crosses, rings, necklaces, rosaries, and silverware. The report traces his movements through Rome to fence the items at various pawn shops and secondhand dealers and to dispose of the murder weapons. After the discovery of the bodies, Chiacchiarino was quickly implicated and agents trailed and surveilled him (recording his spending habits, new wardrobe, etc.)
Described are the killer’s capture, jailing, and trail: He was “decreed to be bludgeoned, have his throat slit [to mirror is own murders], and be chopped into pieces in the public square of Ponte Sant’Angelo, with his head cut off and mounted atop the walls of the Porta Angelica with an accompanying inscription of this infamy.”
Visible on the last page are creases and discoloration showing that the item was casually folded up for distribution or filing, which was common for such news reports.
