Prices for paper, blank books, schoolbooks in Verona. Unrecorded broadside.

[Paper] / [Schoolbooks]. Tariffa Dei prezzi attribuiti all’ infrascritte stampe, e generi di Cancelleria, e Libri scolastici, per regola delle Comuni. [Verona], s.n., dated 18 January 1811. Full sheet [47.3 x 33.0 cm], [1] f. Retaining all four deckle edges, folds, small holes at top and botting margin from having been tacked up.

Unrecorded full-sheet broadside “tariffa” from 1811 Verona listing fixed prices for 85 types, sizes, colors and grades of paper and officially sanctioned schoolbooks, bound notebooks and ledgers. The broadside presumably would have been of use to (and thus made available to) stationers, relevant government officials, and the buying public. This example has pin holes at its top and bottom margins indicating that it was once tacked to a wall for display.

The list reflects the great diversity of paper types (e.g., “Imperiale, sottimperiale, reale soprafina, mezzana soprafina, Comune soprafina,” etc., etc.) that so often bewilder bibliographers. Included are various papers stamped for official use in business or government and legal proceedings. Prices for inks and pens are also provided, and blank books are available in leather or cartone bindings.

The list of schoolbooks provides a glimpse of the texts thought to be essential at the time. These include elementary primers, writing books (with calligraphy plates), “The Rights of Man,” spelling books, Italian grammars, an arithmetic book by Guillard, the “Catechismo del Regno d’Italia,” etc.

OCLC, KVK, and OPAC/SBN/ICCU locate no copies of this broadside.
