Selling wine in 18th-century Bordeaux: Unused form.
[Wine] / [Bordeaux]. Declaration pour la vent des Vins en detail. S.l. [Bordeaux]: s.n., s.a. [after 1765]. [20.5 x 16.7 cm], [1] f. letterpress form. Unused, well preserved.
Unrecorded, unused official form for tracking the sale of wine in late 18th-century Bordeaux.
The form may be translated: “Declaration for the Sale of Wines at Retail. I [xxx] Citizen or Resident of Bordeaux, residing there, on [xxx] street, in the Parish of [xxx], declare to the Officers that I sold and delivered on [xx day] in the month of [xxx] 17[xx] to [name] residing in [xxx] street, in the Parish of [xxx] the number of [xxx bottles, etc.] of Red Wine, and the number of [xxx bottles, etc.] White Wine, which Wine came from my winery or cellar, located on [xxx] street, in the Parish of [xxx] and is part of that which I declared I collected in the year 17[xx] in my property in the Parish of [xxx] which I affirm to be true, under the faith of the seal which I submit to renew in court, if judicially required to do so. In Bordeaux, on the [date].”
A note printed in the margin cites a 1765 law that the form must be filled out completely in written words only (as opposed to numbers) before it is signed. The form thus dates after 1765, but it does not use the French Republican calendar and so predates 1793.
